Ariana Grande switches “positions” with new music Fri, 06 Nov 2020 18:21:56 +0000 On Oct. 30, popstar sensation Ariana Grande released her sixth album, Positions. Grande surprised her fans with the news over Twitter with a tweet saying “I can’t wait to give you my album this month,” causing fans to freak out with excitement as they waited for her to drop the album. Before dropping the album, Grande released the lead single off of the album with the same title “Positions.” This song gave her fans a glimpse of what the sound of the album will be like.

The first song on the album is titled “Shut Up.” This song has a very soothing melody as the music is accompanied with lots of strings. Grande preaches in this song that if you have a negative attitude towards her and the way she is living her life, you need to shut up. If you can’t vibe with her new sound on this album, she wants you to worry about something else. Grande stated that this was a perfect opening to the album because it sets the tone for the rest of the songs.

Grande included many features on this album, including Doja Cat, The Weeknd and Ty Dolla $ign. “Motive,” the track Grande shares with Doja, has a very uplifting and almost disco-like beat. The Weeknd and Ty Dolla $ign’s songs show Grande’s more emotional side as she slows down the songs to describe her feelings toward her new lover. After what Grande has been through, it is hard for her to know if her new lover is real or faking it. These songs create the perfect picture that Grande is unsure of how to feel due to her past emotions and experiences.

Grande experimented with a lot of new sounds in each of her songs on this album. Specifically, her song “Love Language” is very unique and has a very up-beat and interesting sound. Grande lets her lover know in this song that he is exactly what she is looking for in a partner.

The closing song on the album is titled “POV.” This song is the definition of a true love song. The lyrics do not hold back as Grande describes what it is like to love her partner. Grande stated that the lyrics are about how when you dislike something about yourself, but your partner loves it, what an amazing feeling it is for that to happen. The lyrics read “I wanna love me, the way that you love me, for all of my pretty and all of my ugly too I’d love to see me from your point of view.” These lyrics seem very deep and meaningful to Grande as she is currently in a very healthy relationship for the first time in a while.

Overall, the album Positions is very uplifting compared to the singer’s previous albums such as Thank u, Next. The vibe this album gives off is immaculate, and it is obvious to see the growth she has made over the past two years. There is a storyline that stems from her very first album to this album, and it shows what she has accomplished over the years. This album has amazing songs with an amazing voice singing them.

Ariana Grande’s highly anticipated song is finally released Thu, 05 Nov 2020 17:14:53 +0000 Pop icon Ariana Grande released her brand-new song “positions” on Oct. 23. The title track to her upcoming album was dropped with little notice for fans, but still managed to make its way onto a few charts and many fans’ playlists across the globe.

“Positions” has quickly become one of my favorite songs from the singer with its lighthearted, poppy tone and lyrics. Grande presumably penned the song about being content in her current relationship, and it shows. After many messy public breakups over the years, it is nice to hear music that reflects that she is finally enjoying where she is at in that aspect of her life. Lyrics like “heaven sent you to me” and “know my love infinite, nothing I wouldn’t do” add to the song’s laid-back, happy feeling. The overall sound of the single works well with the lyrics and reminds me a little bit of the radio hits from the early 2000s, one of my favorite eras for pop music.

Along with the midnight track release, Grande dropped a music video in which she is portrayed as the president of the United States, showing that powerful women are able to be multiple things at once and still care for themselves. I loved the ‘60s-inspired styling for the singer’s hair, makeup and wardrobe throughout the video, as well as the dimly-lit and political aesthetics.

Overall, I could not be more excited for the new album set to be released on Oct. 30. While I’ve always found her songs to be catchy, I did not become as big of a fan of the singer until her 2018 release of Sweetener. I think she has really found her sound in recent years, and “positions” is one of my favorites. Grande’s album is going to take the world by storm, and I can’t wait to stream it.

NF Surprises fans with “Chasing” Thu, 05 Nov 2020 16:42:53 +0000 On Oct. 12, 2020, NF dropped a new song called “Chasing,” surprising all his fans. It has been a whole year since new music has been put out. His last album, The Search, dropped in July of 2019. In the past, NF has been known for his unpredictability in his music; some of his songs are intense raps or slower sad songs like “Trauma.” “Chasing” is a mixture of both, and it is honestly one of my favorites. The story behind “Chasing” being released actually started with a fan covering a short clip of the song NF had released on his Twitter account in March. He was not going to release the full song because he was afraid fans would not like it.

“Every project I do there are a couple songs that I hold back or feel like just don’t work and [“Chasing”] was going to be one of those songs,” NF tweeted.

He came across Mikayla Sippel who had covered the clip of the song he had posted on his social media and he liked the cover so much he decided to release the song with her featured in it.

“Chasing” is a heart-gripping ballad about breaking down and wanting to break away. Backed by a sparse piano and moving violins, NF sings somberly in sync with Sippel’s soft voice: “I just want to run away, find somewhere to feel safe.” NF refers to some of his pain as “bad days” and everyone has bad days, making it something everyone can relate to. He hasn’t put an official release date for his next upcoming album, but I’m sure he is going to surprise everyone.

Decent at a Distance: Social Distance Review Thu, 05 Nov 2020 16:41:05 +0000    Social Distance is an anthology series on Netflix, created by Hilary Weisman Graham, about people’s experiences while in quarantine in April and May of 2020. Each episode tells a completely different story, including new characters.

Some of these storylines include teens doing online school, those with family members who have COVID-19, those who have lost family members due to COVID-19, people addressing the Black Lives Matter movement and more. This variety of perspectives allows for viewers with different experiences and backgrounds to relate to the show.

Though not every episode is as resounding as others, I like the series overall. It was filmed during quarantine, making the way that the show is structured very unique. Most of the camera angles shown are from Zoom meetings, FaceTime calls or security cameras. I feel that this was a creative and interesting way to go about creating the show.

I would give the show a 3.5/5 rating. It’s very original and interesting to watch, but episodes like “everything is v depressing rn” are weirdly scripted. The episode is supposed to be about teens during quarantine. The teens say some unnatural things like shortening the word quarantine to “quar.” I understand what they were going for, but it came across as cringy, and it was clear that the script was written by adults trying to come across as teens.

If you are looking for a short show to watch and aren’t afraid of a slightly awkward script, I would definitely recommend watching Social Distance. It might not be on the top of my list, but the creativity and innovation used to film an entire show during quarantine makes it worth watching.

Up in the clouds Wed, 04 Nov 2020 15:59:13 +0000    Disney Plus recently released the movie Clouds, the true and inspiring story of Zach Sobiech, telling the story of the eighteen year old boy who passed away from a rare form of lung cancer.

Clouds takes you back to fall 2012 where Zach’s (Fin Argus) story begins. He is an eighteen year old musician showing his music to the world while trying to battle cancer from the past four years. On the day he is going on a date with his crush, Amy Adamle (Madison Iseman), Zach’s mom, Laura (Neve Campbell), gets nervous over a cough that he is getting and takes him to the hospital. While there, thinking he was getting some simple tests and scans, Zach receives news that changes his whole life and outlook. He receives the news that he has a collapsed lung and terminal cancer, a rare bone cancer, that only gives him six to ten months to live. While trying to get himself through and live his life as much as he can, he and his best friend Sammy Brown (Sabrina Carpenter) wrote a song called, Fix me up, from passing a notebook back and forth to each other, that ends up going viral overnight, that a record label noticed that took them to New York. On the plane ride home Zach grabbed a barf bag and started writing down the lyrics for his number one song “Clouds,” that was featured on the radio multiple times and known by many.

Sadly, on May 20, 2013 Zack passed away from losing his long battle to cancer. He passed away with his family and friends by his side, with his legacy still living on.

Clouds is rated PG-13 for a bit of “strong language” and a little bit of sexuality, but is a great movie to watch that gives the strong message to live your life like you won’t have a tomorrow.
