Lake Central News The Student News Site of Lake Central High School Mon, 12 Apr 2021 15:49:40 +0000 en-US hourly 1 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier reunited! Mon, 12 Apr 2021 15:49:40 +0000    The highly-anticipated premiere of the new Disney+ show “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” started streaming on Friday, March 19. The six-episode special is centered on the beloved heroes, Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier, and Sam Wilson aka Falcon. The show is set during post-Endgame events, after the complicated “disappearance” of Captain America. The two, both best friends of Captain America, try to navigate the new world without him. They also don’t seem to get along very well, constantly getting into arguments fueled by bitterness and disappointment with each other. However, when a new “Captain America,” or rather a man dressed up as him, takes over the valiant position as the face of America to protect from a new sinister group of super-soldiers, Sam and Bucky reunite to fight against the new threat without the impostor.

At the time of writing this review, two episodes have been released. Personally, I liked the second episode more because there was more action and teamwork. In the first episode, the two are shown living their separate lives, trying to fill the emptiness that the trauma of the past five years gave them. In the end, they reunite and find out about the impostor Captain America. Episode two was about learning about the new guy and the new threat, the super-soldier group mentioned earlier.

Overall, I think the first two episodes have been a little slow at points, but still entertaining regardless. The plot is starting to progress quicker, meaning there’s more action coming. As a big fan of the MCU movies, it is great seeing some of my favorite, under-appreciated characters in the spotlight. If you like action films and shows like I do, I definitely recommend giving this show a try.

Spider-Man Returns Fri, 09 Apr 2021 15:32:53 +0000  Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is coming back for his third and maybe final film. Marvel fans are excited to see their favorite web-slinging superhero back in another movie. Fans have been expecting a new movie since the sequel Spider-Man Far From Home. In the end credit scene, Peter is in Time Square with Mj. They look on the screen to see a reporter who has a video from Mysterio with the identity of Spider-Man. Peter’s identity has now been revealed to everyone in the world, including every villain.

The actor playing Spider-Man, Tom Holland, is known for not being a great secret-keeper, so the studio tends to give him as little information as possible to not spoil the movie. This time around, the directors and producers gave the cast fake names for the movie to stump fans. Finally, Tom posted a teaser on his Instagram giving the hopeful title of the next movie. In the teaser, Tom is coming out of Jon Watts’s office, who is the director for the Spider-Man movie. Tom walks up to his two castmates, Zendaya who plays MJ and Jacob Batalon who plays Ned. They begin to talk about not getting the movie’s name and then walk by a white board with the hopeful movie title. The name of the movie that was revealed was Spider-Man No Way Home.

It’s almost time to bow out seniors Wed, 07 Apr 2021 14:56:57 +0000  With only two months left of school for the class of 2021, it’s time for them to start thinking about their graduation parties for this year. With COVID-19 cases still around, seniors such as Mackenzie Zielke are thinking about how to still have a party while keeping their guests safe.

“If I have one, I would definitely want to promote social distancing, a small amount of people, masks, hand sanitizing and possibly having it outdoors,” Zielke said.

While making sure everyone is safe, the amount of people coming could be hard to figure out. Having social distancing can limit the amount of people, but having more people with masks on can make a difference.

“I would still want them the whole time, and if they refuse to wear them they can just hang outside or something where they can be majorly socially distanced. I’d prefer to be on the safe side,” Zielke said.

Being on the safe side is a very important part that is playing in our lives. While having a grad party should be fun, being safe should always be the main priority in this time of COVID-19.

Saying Yes to Yes Day Wed, 07 Apr 2021 14:53:58 +0000    A full day where parents must say “yes” to everything their children ask for (with a few exceptions of course) seems too good to be true, right? This book-based family comedy features a family of five that takes a break from their mother’s strict rules and makes the most of their “Yes Day.” With a list of five big asks for the day, the kids take their parents on a crazy adventure that they’re sure to remember forever.

After oldest daughter Katie (Jenna Ortega) calls her mom a “fun-killer,” Allison Torres (Jennifer Garner) says “yes” to a “Yes Day” to prove her wrong. With a bet made in place by Allison, this chaotic day is also a competition between mother and daughter. Allison struggles with her oldest daughter’s need for independence, and the two struggle with their feelings throughout the course of the film.

The Torres family’s Yes Day consists of a makeover for Mom and Dad, a contest to win free ice cream, a windows-down car wash, a game of Kablooey, a trip to Magic Mountain, and, finally, a “Nerd Party.” Things take a wild turn after Magic Mountain when Katie and her mom get in an argument. Mom and Dad come to the rescue to stop the chaos caused by Katie at a music fest and their youngest kids, Evan and Ellie, at home.

This family friendly comedy is sure to bring smiles from all ages; parents and kids alike can relate to the silly events in this film. I enjoyed watching this film and enjoyed the cast members chosen by director, Miguel Arteta. Along with the main cast members, musical artist, H.E.R., makes an appearance. Maybe parents will soon say “yes” to their own children’s “Yes Days” in the future.

Spitting Mad Bars Tue, 06 Apr 2021 15:42:14 +0000 Chris Cortez (11), better known as “Conquis” is an up and coming artist from Dyer, Indiana. His passion for music goes behind every song produced. He hopes to impact all his listeners with his unique flow of music. Support Conquis by simply listening and sharing his songs.

Q: How old were you when you got into music?

A: It all started back when I was 13 years old. Music has always been there ever since I was very young. I didn’t really start songwriting and singing until I was around 13.

Q: Who got you started into music and songwriting?

A: In about second grade, my older brother showed me Eminem. I quickly became hooked to his music and it had brought me to another level with music. The song, “The Way I Am” by Eminem, has taught me that no matter how bad or how good I am, this is the way I am. And that is why I love that song so much because I related to Eminem. It still remains very influential to me till this day.

Q: What are your plans for the future regarding music?

A: I think first I need to get my stuff together. I need to first get a good income with my actual career and all that. I plan on going to college for criminal justice. But once I get the money, enough at least for my own studio, I want to build my company in the music industry. What I want to do is write good stories into music. I want to write books into music. Like poems and gods from ancient Greece, in order to spread my knowledge.

Q: What are behind your songs?

A: Songs I am writing right now include stories of other characters of how I feel on a daily basis. I make characters, along with little emotional traits with each character. I want to tell a good story everytime I make a song. My goal is for people to see the goal or theme I have for that song. It could be a theme about how society is too lustful in worldly things.

Q: How has music bettered you as a person?

A: Music just expresses me, you know? That is my relief from everything in life. I don’t think people get me. I don’t really talk to anybody like that just because people understand me. For some reason, I cannot open up to people. I think my music is just an escape from reality and makes me more in touch with life.

Spring concert in the books Wed, 31 Mar 2021 14:54:57 +0000  This year, choir is making many changes due to COVID-19. They have had to make due with wearing masks, the loss of risers to stand on and concerts are now spanned over two days.

“I think the concert went pretty well. It is nice to get a bit of normalcy during the pandemic, and I’m glad we’re allowed to have concerts,” Elouise Planert (10) said.

While Planert liked the normalcy brought with the concert, other students were unsure whether or not to be prepared for one. Hope McKinney (12) believes that this was the concert they were most prepared for.

“We had sound issues the first two concerts, especially with the balance between the piano, percussion and choirs, but we were able to pretty much fix that problem. And the first two concerts felt rushed, especially because we were all unsure whether we should truly expect a concert this year, but we were more prepared for this past concert,” McKinney said.

With new rules surrounding the pandemic, each student was limited to four immediate family members at the concert. This was different from previous years where anybody could come to the concert.

“Over this past year, choir has been a lot different since we have to wear masks at all times as well as stay socially distanced. These precautions make me feel a bit disconnected from everyone else in the choir, but the sacrifices are worth keeping everyone safe,” Planert said.

With only one more concert in the year, Grace Glasgow (12) believes that the choir has been doing great with all the changes. The choir only has one more concert this year in May.

“I think all of our performances have been great so far and we have done a pretty good job dealing with the masks and stuff, the only issue is the masks and [not] being able to hear very well since we’re spaced out,” Glasgow said.

Reboot in The Works Mon, 29 Mar 2021 16:47:59 +0000 Although Criminal Minds just wrapped up its 15th season last year, a reboot is already in the making. It was the third most-streamed show in 2020, just behind The Office and Grey’s Anatomy, with 35,414 minutes streamed. Fans will be happy to know that on Paramount Plus, where the reboot will be available, all 15 seasons of the show will be accessible. Netflix currently only offers the first 12 seasons of Criminal Minds, leaving viewers to have to pay to watch the remaining episodes.

The original series showcased a group of FBI agents, who were assigned to analyze a suspect’s behavior in order to help out law enforcement, and a new case would appear every “week,” or episode for viewers. There aren’t many details about the reboot, but we do know that the team will focus on one case over 10 episodes. Although the original cast hasn’t said anything about the reboot, there is still hope from fans.

The reboot of Criminal Minds is set to be produced by Erica Messer, who also produced the original Criminal Minds. The series finale ended with Paget Brewster, A.J. Cook, Matthew Gray Gubler, Kirsten Vangsness, Joe Mantenga, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez and Daniel Henney as the cast. Fans are hoping they will be returning, along with some of the cast from the earlier seasons. There is no set release date; however, there is talk that the earliest it would be released is in 2022.

I am very excited about the reboot, and I’m hoping it will be as interesting as the other seasons. I’m also hoping that most, if not all, of the cast from the original show will be in the reboot. Stay tuned as more information comes out over the coming year.

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Coffee Review Mon, 29 Mar 2021 15:58:41 +0000    Starbucks recently came out with a new drink called “Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso.” When this dropped, it instantly became a hit. As a coffee fan, I decided to give this drink a shot. At first I was unsure whether or not I would like it, as I had never tried oatmilk before. My first sip I did not enjoy, but I decided I would continue drinking it to see if maybe my opinion would change. It did not.

The nutrition facts on a grande sized Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso consist of: 120 calories and 20g of carbohydrates. To see the nutrition facts on the other sizes of this coffee, go to the Starbucks website or app.

While drinking this coffee, you can definitely taste the brown sugar flavoring, but there is a strong taste of oatmilk. The coffee itself is not strong at all. My overall review is that if you are an oatmilk fan, I would say to give this drink a try, but if you are unsure about it, I would recommend something different. Certain drinks are not for everyone, and I think this is one of them. I would not get this drink again.
